The Events Calendar – Customing a WordPress Plugin

Written: March 24, 2010

My new client is the Tualatin VFW and they wanted an Events Calendar feature so I installed a popular WordPress plug-in called The Events Calendar.

I’m using widgets on each page and modified a template file (events-list-load-widget-display.php) so that it produced a list layout consistent with my theme:

I also updated a template file (gridview.php) so that it matched my theme:

Tualatin VFW

Written: March 20, 2010

I’ve known Dale Potts for several years through our common networking at the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce and he invited me to join the Men’s Auxiliary for the Tualatin VFW.
In addition I’m working on a site redesign for the Tualatin VFW and here’s a sneak peek:

This site is built using WordPress to allow VFW volunteers to easily update pages, events, officers, programs, members and photos.
The WordPress theme I started with is called Revolution Code Blue 2.0 by Brian Gardner.I’ve made the following edits to customize the look I wanted:

My photographer friend Dan Poush visited me today and had some questions about customizing his blogger site. We made the following updates:

  1. Choose a different theme with dark blue colors
  2. Widened the page width
  3. Changed the font colors
  4. Moved the gadgets around

Here’s the end result:

The blogger platform is very flexible and is easy to modify to suit your taste.

Google Voice

Written: March 15, 2010

I just activated Google voice in order to get a 2nd phone number for my cell phone. I selected 503 852 1662 because it was similar to my cell phone at 503 806 1662.

With this 2nd phone number I was able to add a 2nd business listing at www.superpages.com
Another benefit is that I can now receive text messages at my Google number then forward them by email.
When someone new phones my Google number I hear their name introduced and then I can decide to answer the call or let it go into voice mail. Cool features for Google Voice, so I recommend that you visit www.google.com/voice and get a Google number.

Secure Page Calling an Non-secure Form on Firefox

Written: March 12, 2010

I have a client called YumFinder that has a secure shopping cart page that needed to call a non-secure form to continue shopping. My first approach was to include a link to the non-secure page (http):

Continue Shopping

With a browser like Internet Explorer 8.0 this works OK however with FireFox (Safari, Opera, Chrome) there is a warning dialog that pops up telling you that the form you are calling is not secure (http) while you are on a secure page (https).

I came up with a fix to avoid these security warnings. On the secure page I use a link to a PHP script which is also considered a secure page (https):

Continue Shopping

Then in the PHP script I redirect to my non-secure page:

header(‘Location: http://www.yumfinder.com/continue_shopping.html’);
?>

The non-secure page (http) can now do it’s work:

I can understand why Firefox and other browsers get concerned about navigating from an https to an http page. Now I know how to keep my visitors from seeing un-needed security messages.

Windows 7 – My First Woe

Written: March 11, 2010

I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit the first month it came out and have been very pleased with it because I’ve had a more stable user experience.

Today I encountered my first woe, probably related to Windows 7. My DVD burner can only write CD’s with Windows Explorer. As soon as I insert a blank DVD disc the system tells me to insert another disc.

Hmmm.

Plan B is to not use Windows Explorer to write a DVD, instead I’m writing now with a tool called Free Easy CD DVD burner V4.0 provided by Koyote. It does the job just fine on my laptop, so I’m happy.

I visited the official HP web site to look for newer drivers however none were listed for my Pavilion DV9820us

One Response to “Windows 7 – My First Woe”

  1. Daniel Payne says:

My 2nd Windows 7 woe tonight, my laptop simply rebooted while playing backgammon at Yahoo games, a Java program that I've played hundreds of times before.

Uggh. Windows 7 is feeling a lot like Vista to me now.

I met Brian Baxley as a referral from NetBiz. At first I did SEO edits to his site then discovered that he wanted a site remodel, so we re-used his favorite fonts and colors to come up with his new layout:
